In mid-2005 a group was set up to review the Churches Main Committee's role and functions, with the following terms of reference:
- to examine whether the CMC best reflects the needs of the churches and faith communities in the 21st century;
- to consider whether membership should be widened to embrace other faith communities, in particular so as to improve the efficiency of consultation with Government; and
- to review the size, operation and composition of the Executive Committee.
The Group was chaired by Peter Bottomley MP. The other members were:
- Lord Griffiths of Burry Port
- Harriet Maunsell OBE
- Michael Phelan OBE
